His mother suddenly passes away, dealing this naive young man a heavy blow. A middle-aged man, Takenouchi Tetsuo (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki), who runs a cafe by the Dotonbori River, sympathizes with Kunihiko's plight and pays for his mother’s funeral, allowing him to work in the cafe. Tetsuo's son, Masafumi (played by Koichi Sato), is obsessed with billiards and gambling, causing tension between father and son. As a result, Tetsuo treats Kunihiko, who has lofty dreams, like his own son and takes great care of him, while Masafumi sinks deeper into the mire of betting. One day, while sketching on a bridge, Kunihiko encounters the graceful Machiko (played by Keiko Matsuzaka), and the strange fate quietly unfolds at that moment... This film is adapted from the same-titled work in Teru Miyamoto's 'River Trilogy' (which includes 'The Mud River', 'The Firefly River', and 'Dotonbori River').
