《Spain Ethics Masterpiece
Directed by: Enrique Ribeiro
Synopsis:
It is said to be one of the seven best Mexican films since 2000, a movie trending online; "My Lonely Garden," which just won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival, resembles a shocking social incident. Although produced in Mexico, it conveys the characteristic oppressive coldness of Nordic cinema, reflecting not only the class differences between characters but also reconstructing the conflicting emotions between people through the layered deconstruction of the plot. The director, Enrique River, allows the protagonist to continually watch television news, using the brutal news content to indirectly highlight the societal chaos in Mexico, supplemented by a large number of long takes that quietly capture the protagonist's emotions and actions. It may seem a bit dull, but if you take a moment to slowly appreciate the character's emotional shift, by the time the film reaches its conclusion, you will undoubtedly be stunned by the actions taken. The thought-provoking final scene is both satirical and tragic, making the viewer feel a heavy sense of mood. Beto is an old caretaker looking after a grand mansion located in Mexico City, which has been unoccupied for years. However, Beto is a responsible caretaker who cleans up fallen leaves and scrubs the bathtub every day, keeping the mansion spotless. After so many years of solitude and the monotonous daily tasks, his life becomes even more isolated, with the television being his only connection to the outside world. This has led to a pathological fear of all outsiders; he only interacts with two people: the owner of the house, whom he obeys out of gratitude and respect, and Loupe, a prostitute who is his paid lover. The cost of diligently taking care of the house is that it is set to be auctioned off, placing Beto in a difficult predicament, even though the owner is actively helping him find other work. Yet the years of loneliness and lack of social interaction make the world outside, as depicted through negative news on television, strange and frightening to him. In reality, Beto has no intention of changing jobs, just as he routinely meets the owner, deals with the owner, and then transitions to a jail cell. There are not many characters or dialogue in the film, quietly presenting a state of solitude. The older Beto has been watching over a house in Mexico City that has been unoccupied for many years. For years, Beto has lived alone, developing a pathological fear of the outside world. He only interacts with two people: the woman who owns the house and Loupe. Loupe is a prostitute, as well as his confidante and lover. The house is eventually sold, forcing Beto to face a choice: to bravely leave or try to continue living in his secluded sanctuary.
