  • intro:In the 1920s, America was in the midst of an economic depression, with high unemployment rates, and workers were being excessively exploited, becoming just cogs in the machinery of mass production. Charlie (played by Charlie Chaplin) was a lower-class citizen who worked day and night in a factory filled with the rumble of machines to earn a meager income. The repetitive heavy labor made him feel suffocated, as he twisted people's noses like screws, getting caught in the conveyor belt of machinery, which was both absurd and amusing. Despite being poor, Charlie was kind-hearted. He rescued a homeless woman on the street, and they lived together in a broken yet warm home. Each time Charlie found himself broke and in search of food, he would deliberately commit petty crimes to get thrown into jail. For a while, their situation improved as the homeless woman became a singing and dancing star, but the good times were fleeting.
