  • intro:The film consists of three parts: In the first part, a woman paints an empty apartment twice over the course of more than a month, constantly moving furniture around, writing letters to her lover, and reading the contents of the letters like a diary; In the second part, the woman hails a truck, and she and the truck driver stop at a bar where they enter, and the driver talks to her about his wife, children, and personal life while drinking beer; In the third part, the woman arrives at her lover's apartment, but the woman inside does not allow her to stay there. The woman says she is hungry, and her lover lets her inside, offers her food, and allows her to stay the night. After dinner, the two women make love. The next morning, the woman leaves the apartment. This early black-and-white film directed and starred by Akerman captures the three consecutive stages of the protagonist's love life. In the first part, Akerman lives a recluse life, subsisting on salt, uncontrollably rearranging furniture in her suite, rewriting a love letter. In the second part, Akerman gets a ride with a truck driver and ultimately lends him a helping hand. In the third part, Akerman arrives at her female lover's home where they engage in a sexual relationship. This work, along with Akerman's later films 'Jeanne Dielman' and 'Night', creates an obsession with and mystique in each part. Although visually, it does not provide shock, this minimalist structure is equally intense and profound in all of her outstanding works. This is the debut narrative film by Belgian director Akerman, but it is heavily experimental, clearly influenced by Bresson, with very few dialogues, fragmented plots, and minimalist style. The film was completed in just eight days, with its innovative techniques far outweighing the plot content; the use of long takes is particularly characteristic, as the second segment is a continuous shot. In the final bed scene, the director personally participates, delivering a passionate performance that leaves one speechless. This film belongs to the autobiographical type of the director.
